The Workings of the Social World
Core courses for the major provide the tools to think systematically and critically about human social activity through the acquisition of the sociological imagination, and to help students develop analytical, research, and writing skills. The department offers an active internship program and encourages all majors to enroll in at least one internship course while in good academic standing at the University.
The sociology major prepares students for a variety of professional opportunities. Several of our students go on to attend graduate school every year. A major in sociology also provides a good background for careers in business, criminal justice, and in public and private agencies, organizations, or industries that do social research. Students interested in research and analysis can enhance their understanding with courses in statistics, computers, and advanced research methods.
